Flamazing Engagement

Since 1873, Vreden near the Dutch border has been the home of the Niessing Manufactory. And Vreden is also home to Europe's northernmost free-living flamingo colony in the "Zwillbrocker Venn" nature reserve. Incidentally, the Zwillbrocker Venn, the name of the former upland moor, is not only Europe's northernmost breeding colony of pink flamingos, but can even lay claim to this title worldwide for wild pink and chile flamingos. In cooperation with the Westmünsterland Nature and Landscape Foundation, Niessing has set itself the task of protecting the local flamingo colony and - very importantly - preserving the habitat of this beautiful bird species.

Niessing is the proud beRINGer of the annual hatch - this year there were as many as 15 chicks that received a ring. When flamingos hatch, they have a gray down. Only when the birds get older do they turn rosy or even pink.
