The Niessing design philosophy has its roots in Bauhaus. Our passion is jewelry that dispenses with the decorative and never loses its appeal. Our inspiration: natural phenomena and the sensuous minimalism of Bauhaus architecture. We strive to break the rules, explore new directions, and open closed doors. Traditional craftsmanship, high-tech innovation and visionary design are inseparable for us. We are convinced that less is more: for over 40 years, our greatest design icon, the Niessing Spannring®, has been proving this in the most beautiful way.

Design principles

Niessing and Bauhaus

Collaboration with architects and artists

In the 1970s, Ursula Exner, née Niessing, began collaboration with architects such as Max von Hausen and artists such as Joseph Beuys. This set the decisive course for the Niessing design philosophy.

Weimar Bauhaus

The Niessing design credo is based on the ideals of Weimar Bauhaus. The basic idea of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius: the traditionally separate fields of the performing arts, the fine arts and the applied arts should be combined. By removing the boundaries between craftsmanship, technology, art and industry, Bauhaus also transcended l’art pour l’art, art for art's sake.

»Form follows emotion«

As with the minimalism of Bauhaus architecture, Niessing also focuses on a clear design language. Niessing jewelry is pure form, reduced to the essentials. Niessing design has clear aesthetics; it stands for things that are simultaneously beautiful, functional as well as innovative, and that can be mass-produced. Niessing translates the Bauhaus motto »form follows function« into »form follows emotion«.

THE JOY OF COLOR

Color was much more than a purely decorative element for Bauhaus architects. At Niessing, we are convinced as well: the color of a piece of jewelry is at least as crucial as its shape. Colors express personality and touch our innermost depths: colors are pure emotion. That is why the designers and color alchemists in our workshop have been working on the most extraordinary colors of gold for a long time.
