FAQ
IS THE GOLD USED BY NIESSING SUSTAINABLE?
Niessing uses only gold from the secondary cycle — in other words, recycled gold, also known as urban mining. The refineries provide written confirmation that the gold comes from the secondary cycle. For Niessing, recycled precious metal is the most sustainable source for exclusive jewelry pieces.
WHERE DOES NIESSING SOURCE ITS PRECIOUS METALS?
Niessing sources gold and platinum from the secondary cycle through certified German and Swiss refineries. The precious metals are then melted and alloyed at Niessing's own manufactory in Vreden. Recycling and reuse are also top priorities within the manufactory itself.
ARE NIESSING DIAMONDS CONFLICT-FREE AND RESPONSIBLY SOURCED?
Yes. Niessing exclusively uses natural, conflict-free diamonds. All diamonds are subject to the the Kimberly Process System of Warranties. This ensures that Niessing only uses diamonds from ethically responsible sources. In addition, Niessing assesses the quality of all diamonds in its own diamond laboratory.
WHICH SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATIONS DOES NIESSING HAVE?
Niessing has been a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) since 2021. Since June 2022, the Niessing manufactory has also been a ClimatePartner-certified company, a certification achieved through targeted energy savings and compensation in the form of additional climate protection projects. The ClimatePartner ID is 18363-2206-1001 and can be publicly verified.
DOES NIESSING PUBLISH A SUSTAINABILITY REPORT?
Yes. Niessing publishes a sustainability report every year. Reports for the years 2020 to 2025 are available for download on the sustainability page, together with the supply chain policy, policy statement, information on the complaints procedure, whistleblower protection and the RJC certificate.
HOW DOES NIESSING REDUCE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ITS MANUFACTORY?
Niessing is continuously working to reduce the manufactory's energy consumption and emissions and to use resources responsibly. Measures include the use of a heat pump powered by renewable energy, initiatives to reduce emissions, and the responsible use of water, energy, chemicals and waste. Measures to promote biodiversity are also being implemented on the manufactory grounds.
WHICH COMMITMENTS DOES NIESSING MAKE BEYOND ITS SUPPLY CHAIN?
Vreden, home to the Niessing manufactory since 1873, is also home to Europe's northernmost free-living flamingo colony in the Zwillbrocker Venn nature reserve. Together with the foundation Natur und Landschaft Westmünsterland, Niessing helps protect this colony and preserve the birds' habitat. By purchasing a Niessing NOW Edition Flamingo Rose pendant, customers directly support this commitment.
WHAT ROLE DOES LONGEVITY PLAY IN SUSTAINABILITY AT NIESSING?
Longevity is an essential part of Niessing's understanding of sustainability. Niessing does not create jewelry for short-lived trends, but with the ambition that its design and quality will last for decades. Through careful maintenance, regular inspections and professional refreshing and refurbishment at the Niessing manufactory, jewelry pieces can be worn for a long time and passed down through generations.
